What do drivers eat when on duty?

The favorite foods of truck drivers

During long hours of travel, truck drivers face the challenge of choosing meals that are nutritious, practical and quick to consume, without compromising the energy needed to cope with long distances and driving conditions. Their daily diet is often based on simple foods, easily transportable and that can be consumed even in conditions of limited space, such as the spaces dedicated to catering in rest areas or car parks along the motorway.

The right compromise between convenience and energy intake

One of the favorite foods of truck drivers is undoubtedly the sandwich or tramezzino, often prepared in advance at home, with ingredients such as cold cuts, cheese, vegetables and whole meal or crispy bread. These meals are practical, can be consumed quickly and provide the energy needed to face the hours of driving. Others prefer to carry snacks such as energy bars, dried fruit, nuts and biscuits, which are an excellent source of immediate energy and are easy to transport. As for hot meals, many drivers rely on rest areas with self-service restaurants or on refreshment points along the highways, where they can find ready-made pasta dishes, salads or meat and vegetable dishes. However, the choice is often made by convenience and speed of service, given that the time available is limited. For this reason, some drivers prefer to cook simple meals on board their vehicle, using small portable stoves or thermoses with hot soups or ready-made dishes.

Food, drivers and social media

In recent years, YouTubers and influencers have also started to dedicate space and content to the eating habits of truck drivers. Channels dedicated to the world of truck drivers, such as “Camionista Life” or “Vlog di Autotrasporto”, often talk about how to stay fit and what to eat during long trips. These creators share practical advice, simple recipes and suggestions on how to choose healthy foods even when traveling. Some influencers also show the best-equipped rest areas, offering reviews of restaurants along the highways and advice on how to best organize meals. When time and schedule allow, drivers, like Italians in general, prefer to eat in welcoming and familiar places, where simple but express dishes are served, to provide an ideal supply of energy and conviviality.
