DOLOMITI BALLOONFESTIVAL IN DOBBIACO

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Christmas is over now but the magical spirit of the holidays is still on. Before putting away decorations and lights, we want to take you to Alta Pusteria, Dobbiaco to be precise, where a must – see international event is held every year involving an aircraft that has never lost popularity since its first trip in 1783, and has in fact become the symbol of “wild” travel without a destination, as well as representing the charm of adventure and the discovery of nature. We are talking about the Dolomiti Balloonfestival, a hot air balloon competition but not only that. There will also be about flights, activities for children and torch lighting, without forgetting the series of events featuring radio-controlled hot air balloons.

The next edition of the Balloonfestival, also called Balloonweek, will be inaugurated on January 5, 2025 with live music, Night Glow, an enchanting show characterized by the colors of the hot air balloons and the lights of the flames that fuel them. For an entire week, crews from all over Europe will compete in the winter skies in spectacular competitions, including: Dolomiti Balloontrophy, a long-distance race, Alta Pusteria Trophy, a challenge to the forced target; Flytech Trophy, a fly-in competition, and finally the Dobbiaco-Toblach Trophy, a fox hunt among the hot air balloons.

All those who do not challenge the skies will still be able to try their hand at flying for about an hour, even if between preparation, flight, dismantling and baptism of the hot air balloon, the traveller will be busy for about half a day, the duration of the flight will also depend on the wind and the weather conditions in general.

But since this is truly an event for everyone, even the little ones will have their special moment. During the kids-balloon-day they can go up in the sky and see the panorama from above in a tethered hot air balloon, or fly small hot air balloons or kites.

This festival is also an opportunity to talk about (but above all test) new technologies, such as the innovative ECOMAGIC “Aconcagua” balloon, designed by one of the leading companies in the environmental sector, which aims to reduce fuel consumption and promote more ecological flight.

In short, if during the first half of January you find yourself near Toblach (Dobbiaco in German), stop to enjoy this truly unique spectacle, among breathtaking landscapes, means of transport from another era and international competitions.
